Stun guns don’t cost very much these days, and they can greatly enhance your personal security if you find yourself faced with an attacker.  Stun guns are designed to be used up close - they require personal contact with your attacker, so they’re a last line of defense against an attack.  Stun guns work by delivering a high-voltage (between 80,000 and 200,00 volts) electrical charge when placed in contact with your attacker’s body.

A 2-3 second shot with a stun gun will usually completely disable an attacker.  The high voltage electical charge interferes with the body’s electrical system, causing your attacker to undergo severe muscle spasms.  These mucscle spasms quickly tire your attacker, thus disabling them.   Stun guns are legal to carry and use in most localities, but you’ll want to check your local laws just to make sure before purchasing one.  For more information on the stun gun.

Their are a number of self defense products that can be used to enhance your personal security.  One of the first that comes to mind is mace pepper spray.  Legal in most states and local areas, mace is an effective method for disabling an attacker.  When sprayed in an attacker’s face, mace will cause intense burning and itching to the eyes, and interfere with your attacker’s ability to breathe, causing choking and coughing.  The effects can last for 20 minutes or longer, but there is no permanent damage.

There are a number of products that you can buy that can help you if you get in a situation where you need to defend yourself from an attacker.  One of the first on the list is a container of mace, which when sprayed in an attacker’s face will incapacitate him for several minutes at least.  Mace comes in containers of all sizes and shapes, so you should be able to find one that you feel comfortable carrying.  In fact, buy several different ones - one for your pocket or purse, one for your car, and one or more for your home.

Another handy self defense product is a stun gun.  You’ll need to check the laws in your locality to make sure it’s OK to have one - they are legal in most states.  A stun gun delivers an electrical charge which interferes with your attacker’s nervous system, causing severe muscle spasms.  A stun gun can be used to incapacitate an attacker despite a high level of pain tolerance.  Just keep in mind that while mace can be sprayed at your attacker from some distance, a stun gun requires personal contact with your attacker.  So why not increase your chances against an attacker and think about buying one or both of these self defense products.

The Pepper Pager is a 1/2 oz. container of 10% OC pepper spray diguised as an everyday pager.  While not that many people are carrying pagers these days, the unit is still quite small and discrete.  The unit features 2 million Scoville heat units, which is enough to cause pain, swell the mucous membranes and cause the eyes to slam shut.

The pepper spray pager features two 1/2 oz. cannisters which both fire at the same time, delivering twice the amount of spray as other 1/2 oz. units.  The unit has an effective range of 8-12 feet, meaning you can stop your attacker before they get their hands on you.  In addition, it contains enough pepper spray for 10-12 one-second bursts of pepper spray.   For more information on the pepper spray pager.

Pepper spray batons are small, baton shaped containers of pepper spray designed to be carried easily in a pocket, a purse, or on a key ring.  They contain about 4g of 10% OC pepper spray.  When sprayed in an attacker’s face, this pepper spray will keep your attacker busy while you make your escape.  OC pepper spray causes intense burning to the eyes, and causes them to slam shut.  In addition, it causes the mucous membranes to swell, interfering with your attacker’s breathing and causing choking and an intense burning in the nose.

Pepper spray batons use convenient refill cartridges so you don’t have to replace the whole unit when it runs out of spray.  The refills are only about one-fifth the cost of replacing the batons.  A four gram unit contains enough pepper spray for 3 one-second bursts or shots.  These units can spray up to 5 feet away, so you can stop your attacker before they get their hands on you.  For more information on pepper spray batons.

Pepper spray is a very effective self-defense weapon.  Pepper spray usually contains 10% OC pepper spray, which is an extreme irritant to the eyes and mucous membranes.  A shot of pepper spray will cause the eyes to slam shut with intense burning, and cause the mucous membrames to swell, making it difficult for your attacker to breathe.  The effects will last 150-20 minutes, giving you plenty of time to run away and call for help.

Pepper spray comes in a variety of convenient size containers.  It comes in  containers small enough for a pocket or purse, larger containers for home use, disguised as a pager or a pen, and there is even one model disguised as a tube of lipstick.  Effective distance varies with the size of the container, but usually is in the range of 5 to 10 feet.  This means that you can spray your attacker before they actually get their hands on you.  The number of shots, usually one-seconds bursts, also varies from 5-20 shots with the size of the container.  For more information about pepper spray.

Pepper shot is 10% pepper spray in a container that delivers a 1 second “shot” of pepper spray.  It can be a very effective self-defense weapon, as it can be used from a distance of up to 8 feet or more - before your attacker has a chance to get his hands on you.  And the effects are painful and immediate.  The pepper spray causes the veins in the eyes to swell, slamming the eyes shut.  And it swells the mucous membranes, making it difficult for your attacker to breathe.  A shot or two of pepper shot can disable an attacker long enough for you to run away and start screaming for help.

Pepper shot comes in various sizes, from very small containers designed for a pocket or purse, to larger containers designed to be carried on a belt or kept in your home.  You can also get a container of pepper shot with a convenient clip for attaching it to the visor in your car.  Pepper shot comes in 1/2 oz., 2 oz., and 4 oz. sizes.  The 1/2 oz. size will deliver up to 5 one-second bursts of pepper  spray.  The 2 oz. size holds enough pepper spray for 10-12 one-second shots and can be used at a distance of 10-12 feet.  The 4 oz. size can deliver 18-20 shots over a distance of 15-18 feet.   For more information about pepper shot.

Mace pepper spray can provide you with a way to protect yourself from potential attackers.  A shot of mace pepper spray in an attacker’s face will temporarily incapacitate them, giving you a chance to start running away and yelling for help.  Mace pepper spray causes the eyes to slam shut, with intense burning and itching, and interferes with the respiratory system, making it difficult to breathe.  It is not likely your attacker will come after you, as they will be dealing with the effects of the mace.   Mace pepper spray is available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, so why not get some for your purse, your pocket, your car, your keychain and your home?

Mace pepper spray comes in small containers that fit conveniently in your pocket or purse, and even smaller ones that are designed to go on a keychain.  You can even get mace that is stored in a pair of walking weights for your early morning or late night walking or jogging sessions.  Most mace products can be sprayed from a distance of 5 feet or more, so you can stop your attacker before they get their hands on you.  Look for 10% OC pepper spray as the main ingredient in the mace that you buy.

Mace uses a pepper spray that contains 10% OC (Oleoresin Capsicum) pepper.  This substance is an extreme irritant to the eyes and respiratory system.  One good thing about mace is that the effects are not permanent or lethal.  Mace is a good enough deterrent that many policemen carry it.  Mace is perfectly legal to own and use in most states (check local laws, some areas have restrictions on the types of mace that can be used).  Buy several different containers of mace and keep one in your home, your car, your purse and your pocket.  For more information about mace.

If you are, be sure to take along some bear spray.  Grizzly bears are a real danger in some of our national parks.  If you plan to be hiking or camping in an area with a grizzly bear population, then you should be prepared for an encounter with one.  Bear sprays are special pepper sprays that are used to repel grizzly (and other species) bears in the event of an attack.  They use a special formula that is approved by the EPA for use against bears, so make sure you get one that’s approved for the type of bear you might encounter.

The Sierra Club has asked the Forest Service to require that anyone entering a national park with a grizzly bear population be required to carry an approved bear spray.  This is to protect both humans and the grizzly bear population, as bear spray could save you from having to kill a grizzly in self-defense.  More information about bear spray.
