Some inexpensive self-defense weapons

Self Defense Weapons

If you’re looking to enhance you personal security, there are a number of inexpensive self defense weapons available to you.  One of the least expensive and easiest to use is mace pepper spray.  Mace is legal in most localities, is the same as that carried by police officers, and doesn’t cost very much.  Spraying mace in an attacker’s face will incapacitate them for 20 minutes or more.  Mace causes intense burning and  itching to the eyes, and interferes with breathing, causing coughing and choking.  There is no permanent damage, however.  You can buy mace in small, easy to carry or conceal containers.

Another self-defense weapon that doesn’t cost very much is a stun gun.  Stun guns deliver up to 80,000 volt electical charges to your attacker.  This causes uncontrollable muscle spasms that are disabling.  You can buy a stun gun disguised as a cell phone or a working flashlight.  One thing to keep in mind about stun guns is that they require close personal contact with your attacker - they have to be in contact with your attacker’s body in order to work.  For more information on self-defense weapons.

A few ideas for self defense products

Self Defense Products

Their are a number of self defense products that can be used to enhance your personal security.  One of the first that comes to mind is mace pepper spray.  Legal in most states and local areas, mace is an effective method for disabling an attacker.  When sprayed in an attacker’s face, mace will cause intense burning and itching to the eyes, and interfere with your attacker’s ability to breathe, causing choking and coughing.  The effects can last for 20 minutes or longer, but there is no permanent damage.

Another good type of self defense product is the stun gun.  Again, stun guns are legal in most states and local areas, but you will want to check before buying one.  A stun gun can also be used to disable an attacker.  A 2-3 second shot with a stun gun can cause an attacker to go into muscle spasms, which quickly tires the muscles, incapicating the attacker.  Stun guns are available in all sizes and shapes; there are even some models available that look like real cell phones.  For more information on self defense products.

Products for enhanced self defense

Self Defense

There are a number of products that you can buy that can help you if you get in a situation where you need to defend yourself from an attacker.  One of the first on the list is a container of mace, which when sprayed in an attacker’s face will incapacitate him for several minutes at least.  Mace comes in containers of all sizes and shapes, so you should be able to find one that you feel comfortable carrying.  In fact, buy several different ones - one for your pocket or purse, one for your car, and one or more for your home.

Another handy self defense product is a stun gun.  You’ll need to check the laws in your locality to make sure it’s OK to have one - they are legal in most states.  A stun gun delivers an electrical charge which interferes with your attacker’s nervous system, causing severe muscle spasms.  A stun gun can be used to incapacitate an attacker despite a high level of pain tolerance.  Just keep in mind that while mace can be sprayed at your attacker from some distance, a stun gun requires personal contact with your attacker.  So why not increase your chances against an attacker and think about buying one or both of these self defense products.

Personal security products

Personal Security Products

There are a number of different personal security products that can contribute to your personal safety.  One of most basic products is mace pepper spray.  Spray some of this stuff in an attacker’s face and you will incapacitate them for up to 20-30 minutes, but there will be no permanent physical damage.  Mace is perfectly legal to own, carry and use in most states.   Another personal security product that is readily available is a personal alarm.  These are small, electronic alarms which emit an ear piercing (120+ db) sound when activated.  They are designed to draw attention to your situation as well as scare your attacker away.

For protection from animals while out jogging or walking, consider an animal repellent.   Specially designed canine mace repellent is available, but regualar mace will do in a pinch.  You can also buy an electronic dog repeller, which contains an ultrasonic sound transmitter that emits a high-pitched (so high that we can’t hear it)  noise that hurts the dogs ears enough to make them run away.  These devices also contain a bright flashing LED strobe light which temporarily blinds the dog.  So if you have to walk a ways to your car often, or jog or walk regularly, consider enhancing your personal safety with one of these personal security products.

A personal security alarm can increase your personal safety

Personal Security Alarm

A personal security alarm is a small, portable alarm that can be activated by pressing a button or pulling a cord attached to a wrist strap.  These devices can be used in the event you are attacked in order to signal for help and to scare your attacker away.  You can buy a variety of different types of personal security alarms.  One type is a combination alarm and container of mace.  Another doubles as a flashlight and a signal light.

Still others are designed to protect you when you are staying in a hotel or motel room.  These alarms are designed to hang on the door or door knob and sound an alarm if someone tries to open the door.  They work by sensing motion.  Another type of door alarm is shaped like a doorstop.  You place it under the door and it senses the pressure applied to it if someone tries to open the door.  So if you jog, or walk, or travel quite a bit, you might want to consider getting a personal security alarm.

Ways to increase your personal security

Personal Security

If you’re worried about becoming the victim of a crime, there are lots of ways you can enhance your personal security.  Consider taking a course in basic self-defense.  Many of these courses are offered by community centers and other organizations, often at no cost to you.  Consider buying a self-defense product such as mace, a stun gun, a taser, or a personal alarm.  Mace is perfectly legal in most states, and when sprayed in an attacker’s face can incapacitate them, giving you time to run away and start yelling for help.  Stun guns and tasers are more regulated, so check your local laws before purchasing either of these devices.

If tasers or stun guns are  allowed in your locatility, they can be used to stop an attacker in his tracks.   You might also consider carrying a personal alarm.  These are small devices that, when triggered, give off an ear-piercing (120+ dB) alarm to scare your attacker away and to alert others to your situation.  Finally, become more aware of your surroundings - always keep an eye out for anyhthing unusual going on around you and be prepared to run and start screaming if you feel threatened.  For more information about personal security.

Protect yourself with a personal alarm while jogging or traveling

Personal Alarm

One way that you can protect yourself when you are out walking or jogging is to carry a personal alarm.  These are small, loud alarms that you can set off by pulling a strap or pushing a button.  Some are disguised as flashlights (with a working light!), and some also contain mace pepper spray.   Look for something that makes a lot of noise to attract attention and scare your attacker away (120dB or more).

If you travel on business or for pleasure, a personal door alarm can help protect you from potential burglars or attackers.  Most of these are small alarms that are designed to hang on the door or the doorknob and sense the movement of someone trying to open the door.  Some are shaped just like a doorstop, and are placed under the door and sense the extra pressure when someone trys to open the door.  Again, look for something that makes a lot of noise - ideally you want to scare your attacker away and perhaps you’ll even attract enough attention that  someone spots him and can give a description to the police.  For more information on the personal alarm.

Surprise your attacker with a pepper spray ring

Pepper Spray RingPepper Spray Ring

Someone trying to attack you could be in for the surprise of their life if you get this new pepper spray ring.  Designed to look like a fashionable gold or silver ring, it is actually a miniature pepper spray container that contains a pepper spray rated at 2 million Scoville heat units - the hottest you can buy.  Compare this to a jalapeno pepper, which has a Scoville heat rating of 5,000.  This device is designed for close use - it will only spray about 12 inches, so be sure you are in close contact with your attacker before using it.

The pepper spray it contains will quickly cause your attacker to lose their faculties, causing intense burning of the eyes, difficulty breathing, coughing, choking, and swelling of the mucous membranes.  This effect can last for up to 45 minutes.  So spray your attacker, start yelling for help, and get out of there.  The pepper spray ring contains enough pepper spray for 2-3 one second bursts.  For more information on the pepper spray ring.

Pepper spray pager - A 1/2 ounce pepper spary disguised as a pager

The pepper spray pager features two 1/2 oz. cannisters which both fire at the same time, delivering twice the amount of spray as other 1/2 oz. units.  The unit has an effective range of 8-12 feet, meaning you can stop your attacker before they get their hands on you.  In addition, it contains enough pepper spray for 10-12 one-second bursts of pepper spray.   For more information on the pepper spray pager.

Pepper spray batons are ideal for the pocket, purse or keyring

Pepper spray batons

Pepper spray batons are small, baton shaped containers of pepper spray designed to be carried easily in a pocket, a purse, or on a key ring.  They contain about 4g of 10% OC pepper spray.  When sprayed in an attacker’s face, this pepper spray will keep your attacker busy while you make your escape.  OC pepper spray causes intense burning to the eyes, and causes them to slam shut.  In addition, it causes the mucous membranes to swell, interfering with your attacker’s breathing and causing choking and an intense burning in the nose.

Pepper spray batons use convenient refill cartridges so you don’t have to replace the whole unit when it runs out of spray.  The refills are only about one-fifth the cost of replacing the batons.  A four gram unit contains enough pepper spray for 3 one-second bursts or shots.  These units can spray up to 5 feet away, so you can stop your attacker before they get their hands on you.  For more information on pepper spray batons.
