The M18 Advanced Taser

This is the real deal, folks. It has all the same features and packs the same punch as models used by the police and military worldwide. It looks and feels pretty much like a 9mm handgun. And now it’s available to consumers just like you and me. The M18 Advanced Taser is one of two consumer models now offered by Taser International. The other, the Taser C2, is targeted mainly to women – we’ll take a look at it in another post. So let’s take a closer look at the M18.
The M18 taser works using a principle called EMD (electro-muscular disruption) and causes an effect called NMI (neuro-muscular incapacitation). So what exactly does that mean? Well, our bodies’ nervous system is controlled by small electrical impulses. A taser uses a pair of electrodes to deliver some pulses of its own – 50,000 volts worth of pulses. That sounds like more than enough to kill someone, but in reality the amperage (a measure of the actual power of the pulses) is very minute.
The pulses start to interfere with the ones being used by the body’s nervous system, causing an uncontrollable contraction of the muscles. This contraction is severe enough to completely disable a person as long as the pulses are being delivered. This is the NMI effect. So don’t confuse a taser with a stun gun. A stun gun relies on causing muscle spasms, which eventually – with the emphasis on eventually – causes a person to tire. The effect of a Taser and NMI is immediate. In addition, once fired the M18 will deliver these pulses for 30 seconds, even when dropped. This means that you will have time to beat a hasty retreat after hitting your target.
Another feature of the M18 taser is an optional built-in laser sight. This makes targeting your attacker a breeze – just like the police and military snipers do. The M18 has a reach of 15 feet – that’s how long the wires are that connect the taser to the set of electrodes that deliver the shock. Firing from that distance, it’s hard to be precise. But this is not a problem with a taser – we have nerves and muscles all over our bodies, so it doesn’t much matter where you hit a person – the effect will be the same.
The M18 taser uses replaceable cartridges that contain the compressed nitrogen gas that propels the set of wires and the projectile that contains the electrodes. These cartridges also contain Taser’s advanced AFID technology. This is basically a bunch of little pieces of paper that are dispersed whenever the taser is fired. Each little piece of paper contains the unique serial number of the taser that was fired. This makes it possible to determine the owner of any taser that has been used in a situation.
So what happens if I fire and miss my target? Well the M18 also features another set of electrodes which can be used as a touch stun gun – just like a regular stun gun except you have the added effects of EMD. So if you fire and miss, or if you don’t have any time to put some distance between you and your target, you’re not left defenseless.
Here are a few more specs on the M18:
- Delivers 18-26 watts of electrical power at 50,000 volts
- Includes a leather case
- Weight – 18 oz.
- Power source – 8 AA batteries
